Another victory of Rio de Janeiro! After several successful events and being the first city in South America to hold four consecutive editions of a category World Championship, we will organize this important Pan-American Team Championship. Depending on the participant countries, we believe we will make the main chess event in the history of Rio de Janeiro state and perhaps of Brazil.
The Rio de Janeiro State Chess Federation, the Brazilian Chess Confederation and the World Chess Federation invite all countries of the Americas to take part in the Pan-American Team Chess Championship in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
We hope to receive the main countries of the Americas. We are ready to accomplish an excellent event and we are sure that everyone will be very satisfied with the fine organization prepared.
The Pan-American Team Championship is made of 6 players' teams who will play in 4 boards. The Schedule will be made of 6 days, from December 13th to 18th 2003. We expect to have more than 10 teams. All delegations will have accommodation and meals paid by the local organization. There will be sightseeing throughout the main cultural and tourist sites in Rio de Janeiro.
The champion team of the Pan-American Team Championship will be eligible to play the World Team Championship, that will be formed by one team/country of each one of the 5 continents plus the 5 best teams in the Olympiad.
Since 1998 we have organized four World Youth Chess Championships in Rio de Janeiro. The events were a success of audience and results mainly because the Brazilian team was the champion in the first tournament. In the second event, Poland was the winner, Argentina became the champion in the third tournament after a tough dispute with Hungary and in the fourth event Poland was again the winner. After high approval from several countries we intend to improve the organization and to accomplish in 2003 a more important main adult event with much more return and importance.
The last Pan-American Team Championship happened in the year 2000 in the city of Mérida, Venezuela. Brazil was 2nd Place. This year Brazil will be represented by its maximum strength and we hope to improve our position.
